Review of the Pokemon Emerald
The review of the Pokemon Emerald game for Gameboy. It's great successor of the previous Pokemon versions. Check this review for the complete opinion about this addictive game.
They are already here
These small pokemon beasts are coming to your GBA displays again. Could this new game episode bring enough innovations, to explain its existence? Is it really a new gaming Smaragd? Don't seek answer at jeweller, but in our review.
On the ancient Gameboy it was Pokemon Yellow, on the colored mutation called Gameboy Color it was Pokemon Crystal and on GBA it's now reviewed Pokemon Emerald.
. Nintendo holds to its tradition and for every two Pokemon game episodes they are giving out special version that supplements its predecessors with many improvements, new quests and so on. And it's not any different for Pokemon Emerald.
What innovations does the shiny Smaragd (Emerald) bring?
The basic outline stays the same in all game series, but there are changes in Pokemons, regions, villains and some newly added options. For example Ruby/Saphire did bring, except of a new graphic for GBA, more than 100 new Pokemons, brand new region, opportunity to fight with two Pokemons together, attend beauty contests, grow plantlets, construct secret base, make TV interviews and many other minor upgrades.
And Emerald does bring exactly the same, plus polishing some details, enhancing the story line and this all nicely packed to neat green box. Many innovations are rather smaller ones, on the other side, there are many of them. Right after the first fight, you'll notice new thing in the form of added animations for individual Pokemons. Even the story has been refined a little. At Ruby there was team Aqua as the chief villains, in Sapphire it was team Magma and in Emerald you have them both. You'll wait to see also new locations and fights, which you couldn't run against in the older versions. Some Pokemons have changed their territory, so they are more precious, than others. Many of the changes are not served to you right from the beginning, but you uncover them slowly.
The biggest novelty of the games Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green, the last ones before Emerald, was wireless network adapter giving you the option to easily connect more GBA handhelds and thereby comfortably exchange or fight Pokemons with your friends. Emerald also supports wireless connection, but the adapter is not provided with the game, which is a bit shame. But you can still look forward to wider wireless and communication options in the Unity Room. It has become a custom that you can interconnect some of their other games. For Emerald you can do so with games like Pokemon Colloseum for Game Cube and Pokemon Dash running on the Nintendo DS. By connecting them you'll get hidden bonuses, that you couldn't acquire in any other way.
The same, but still great
Pokemon Emerald has maintained the brilliant gameplay of the previous episodes. Even if I have finished Ruby, I have played and successfully finished Emerald too. Maybe it doesn't bring anything revolutionary, the innovations are of a smaller type, but still they are worth it. Completely superb game design, that offers many new options, have catch me even if I have known the main plot line and couldn't be surprised with it. There's very excellent and sophisticated RPG system. This alone can get you addicted to this game for many days. It gives you many strategic options how to play this game. You can take many side quests and enjoy them greatly while improving the level of your pokemon.
Brighter aspects of the game:Strategic depth
Captivating gameplay
Long durability
Excellent RPG system
Gloomy aspects of the game:Outdated graphic
Very similar to the previous episodes
Graphic: 7/10
Sounds: 8/10
Music: 8/10
Gameplay: 9/10
Overall: 7.5/10
Pokemon Emerald Result:Improved and enriched version of the games Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire is not bringing any revolutionary changes, but it's still very good game to spend many hours with. If you haven't played the previous episodes, add the 1 point to the overall score.
